Welcome to my wine making from fresh fruit category page! One of the greatest joys of making homemade wine is that you get to enjoy wines that you can’t find commercially. This is specifically true when making wine from fresh fruit. If you grow the fruit yourself, even better! You will be enjoying the gifts your plants and trees provide you with in the form of delicious fresh fruit wines.
While most people think of grapes for use in winemaking, virtually any fruit can be used. When fruits other than grapes are used in making wine, many people refer to those wines as country wines. My article on country wine making has more information and is a good place to start.
Grapes are excellent choices for wine making because they have a lot of the right stuff needed for wine making already. The sugar level in properly grown grapes is high enough to produce wines with sufficient alcohol and the acid level is generally in the ball park where it should be to ward off bacterial growth. Yes, it is true that most people tweak their homemade wine recipes with additives and acid additions. But for the most part, if you have a lot of grapes (it takes about 10 lbs of grapes to make a gallon of wine) and a lot of time, you can make wine.
Other fruits that are not as sweet as grapes need the addition of sugar to bring up the alcohol level to an acceptable level for homemade wine. But, that’s ok with me! The rewards of wine making with fresh fruit are enormous and the variety of wines are exciting.
On this page, you will find links to various recipes and techniques for making wine with fresh fruits. While it is more difficult of a process than wine making from kits, much of what you may know from kit winemaking and the equipment can be leveraged with the fresh fruit of your choice.
